Manfred Deselaers, Oświęcim, Polska

Father Dr Manfred Deselaers is working as Pastor abroad of the German Bishops' Conference at the Centre for Dialogue and Prayer in Oświęcim, Poland

Two years ago when I visited the St. Magdalena monastery in Speyer, where Edith Stein had lived as a teacher, a nun showed me a corner in the church and told me that Edith Stein had prayed a lot there, sometimes all night.

I imagine her sitting in the chapel talking to Christ. Edith Stein already knew then, 10 years before Hitler came to power, that the lives of her Jewish people, the future of Germany and her own life were in great danger. She was sure that Christ was looking at her with love and listening to her. All her worries and fears were safe in His heart, so she said her Yes. She was ready to go the way God called her.

Edith Stein lived in the first half of the 20th century.
I live today in the first half of the 21st century.
What does my world look like?
What should my path be?

I live in a time when many have lost the courage to love their neighbour and withdraw into a closed, selfish world.

There are great social inequalities, not only within individual nations, but also between states in Europe and even more so worldwide.

There is a great inability to solve problems through dialogue and solidarity, the temptation to do so through violence is increasing.

And the terrible corona virus is radically exacerbating many problems.

People are looking for guidance and hope. But our churches, which should actually offer this, are themselves in a deep crisis and often no longer manage to show people the light of Christ and to credibly witness the path of Love.

Like Edith Stein, I want to entrust my worries to God and ask him to show me the way I should go.

O good God
make me an instrument of your Peace!
Help me
- not to cease praying,
- to trust in love,
- to build bridges between people,
- not to leave the lonely alone,
- to assist the oppressed,
- to share with those in need,
- to be ready for forgiveness and reconciliation,
- not to lose patience,
- not to fear death
- and to trust YOU.

I ask this through Christ our Lord
and trusting in the intercession of Edith Stein,
Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, Patroness of Europe.
