Since 2002, groups of students from the school “Rheinisch-Westfälische Berufskolleg” for hearing impaired youth in Essen, have been coming to Auschwitz. This year the group consists of eight deaf students and their accompanying teachers. The focus of their Memorial visit is the confrontation with National Socialism. In addition to the main camp – where they will also be involved in conservation work – participants will visit the Stutthof concentration camp near Gdansk, visit the Westerplatte, the Krakow ghetto and Schindler’s factory. The trip offers the opportunity to get to know more about Poland so visits to Gdańsk and Kraków are included to generate interest for further private visits.
