January 21, 2019 - January 25, 2019
The Diocese of Newcastle with leader Lesley Hillary has organized a 5 day visit in January 2019 for 20 participants including 10 local politicians from the City of Newcastle, as well as other community and faith leaders. The study visit is vital for participants to learn about the experience of social isolation and persecution through the lives and deaths of thousands of individuals detained and executed in the Nazi death camps Auschwitz – Birkenau. The visits and planned workshops will enable those involved to engage with issues related to the Holocaust and anti – Semitism which are of particular relevance today, in their effect on community cohesion i.e. the consequences of extreme racial, religious and political prejudice and discrimination.
